One of the last cars touched by J Mays, at Ford. Replacing him, will be Moray Callum.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The first problem Moray has, is his, Jag designing, brother.

Kinja'd!!!

He just never got Ian's success and acclamation.

Sure, he did a nice job, helping Laurens van den Acker and Ikuo Maeda at Mazda and even on some newer Fords, but he never faced a challenge as great as running the design of a big company like Ford.

Kinja'd!!!

Will the younger Callum finally be able to make a name for himself in the design world ? Or he will keep being for Ian, what Ralf Schumacher is for Michael?

Maybe he can fix the design on the new mustang.

The rear looks much better in silver.

He played a role in the new Mustang too, some say the greenhouse was his work.

I was honestly hoping for more than a measily 200lb weight loss. Oh well. It's not like the previous car was the heavy(chevy *cough*) of the group anyway.

Your move, GM. 3200lb next gen Camaro, or GTFO.

Only an Opponaut will detour a design thread into technical details. Keep it up.

Thanks, I somehow passed over that earlier.

I was right about one thing, it wasn't going anywhere near 3,000 or less like the fanboys kept pronouncing. 200lbs loss is impressive though.

What's with automakers and super ugly rear ends lately?

Some designers wanted the back to be boxy and American, others wanted it to be curvy and European, this is the middle way.

yuck. They gotta go all or nothing on designs.... this ends up in cars that don't flow and look terrible in the back.

That sounds a bit hyperbolic. Of course he knows what to do. He was design chief for both Mazda and Ford NA. I doubt anyone would've just handed him a job if he wasn't capable.

As for making a name for himself, I'd say being promoted to global Ford design chief sounds like making a name for himself. Hell, I'd say he's more important than his much oft celebrated brother. In any case, I don't think car designers care much as long as their designs make it into production. Those in the industry know who they are, whether they are the ones that get all the attention like Ian Callum, Giugiaro, or Castriota or are less recognized, but still seminal designers like Martin Smith, or Peter Horbury, or Frank Stephenson.

Like I said on a different thread about the Mustang, the only V8 production car that has 3,000lbs is a Ferrari 458. Sometimes fanboys need to get their heads on straight.

200lb weightloss is amazing when you consider that the GT might end up weight about the same as the C7 Corvette.

Yeah that is insane to think about really. 200lbs loss is really huge.

Then again, maybe they are saying 200lbs down but it's meant as something like what happened with the corvette a la "chassis is X pounds down like we said!" but the car still ways the same due to other complexities.

Either way, I'd like to hear where the weight loss was on the new mustang.

You know how a designer makes a name for himself? By doing something memorable, something that people will keep talking about. Something like changing the image of entire brands, like Chris Bangle or Peter Schreyer did, or having chance to design something really special, like Ken Okuyama. Moray Callum needs to do a few stunning designs, if he wants his brother's recognition, and he is one of the best positions to do it.
